Painting on Mondays at Barnoldswick Library - August 2015

The August program continues to look at different ways to use watercolours.and will start on the 3rd of August with a landscape painting that uses both watercolour and gouache on a blue grey surface and is similar to the materials used by Turner to produce some of his watercolours. The rest of the sessions deal with topics as diverse as a Connemarra on the 10th and a landscape that uses a simple formula to achieve effective results. This is followed on the a flower portrait of water lilies at Portmeirion on the 17th which will set white water-lilies against a wet into wet background. and we finish the month off with a maritime painting featuring a line and wash of a clipper type schooner under full sail. For the faint hearted do not worry about the drawing of the schooner as I will supply watercolour paper with a faint outline of the boat printed in water-soluble ink to trace around with waterproof indian ink, the underlying outline disappears once paint is applied. For the brave there is a blank piece of paper.

3rd August - Mon 1-3
Alpine scene - Watercolour and Gouache
A painting on a blue grey paper that uses both pure watercolour and body colour (gouache). Turner painted with similar items.

10th August - Mon 1-3
Cashel Bay County Galway - Watercolour Landscape
A painting of Connemara featuring a mountain skyline and a little cottage set at the side of Cashel Bay. Uses a simple formula to achieve effective results and composed from a photograph taken by one of my painting friends (A.S).

17th August - Mon 1-3
Water Lilies - Watercolour Flower Portrait
A flower portrait of water lilies at Portmeirion set in a wet into wet background.

24th August - Mon 1-3
Fully Rigged Schooner - Maritime Line and Wash
A simple line and wash, but with some detailed drawing, of a 19th century clipper type schooner.

The cost is £9.50 per half day session and includes all materials needed to complete the painting - just come, sit down and paint. To book just call into Barnoldswick Library or contact Malcolm on 07776036674 or just turn up as there is usually an extra place set. see www.malcolmmbullock.co.uk/articles for further information. You can also follow what is going on at www.facebook.com/malcolm.painting.classes

Due to the nature of the classes the painting sessions are suitable for both the Beginner (some people have not painted since school) and the improver (those who wish to hone their existing painting skills). In each class I will demonstrate how to paint an effective scene in watercolour or acrylic. There is also the occasional session where the painting is done in line and wash, pastel or even oils (oils is usually a full day session). The sessions usually take place on Monday afternoons from 1-3pm but occasionally switch to a Tuesday afternoon when there is a bank holiday. If the session warrants it we take a full day but there is usually a half day option providing there is space.

Course Fee - £9.50p/afternoon session - This includes all art materials as well as the loan of brushes etc

The sessions feature a paint- along where the participants will start and finish the painting within the session. The techniques used to produce the painting will follow a step by step approach. This method of teaching allows the individual to quickly develop confidence in using the paints. Skills are also built up through the explanation of the various techniques used in painting the scene as well as the theory, such as composition and colour theory, that goes with it. The development of a personal style of painting is encouraged through individual assessment at various stages of the painting. No one paints exactly the same, we are all unique.

Booking is preferable as course numbers will be kept reasonably small to ensure individual attention. I do usually set an extra place or two so it is also possible to turn up on the day.

Booking can be taken at the information counter at the library or call, text (07776036674) or contact me via the "contact me" page of this website and I will pass the booking on to the library.
